Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Assistantships are reserved for graduate-level students and Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA), Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA), and Graduate Assistantships (GA) are highly sought after positions because of the benefits (reserved monthly pay and tuition waiver) it provides, thus it will take being proactive and dedication on your part to find these opportunities as they aren’t always posted on job boards. Assistantship appointments are typically half time (50 percent) or quarter-time (25 percent) for a specific time period.
Here are some common ways students find Graduate Assistantship positions:
- Talk with your professors and faculty within your department about open GA positions. It is important that you have done some previous research and thought about how your area of interest and skillset matches the faculty research specialization.
- Talk with professors of different and complementary departments. Many times, GTA/GRA positions aren’t posted and, instead, are found through networking and communicating with different departments. Remember, you’re inquiring and trying to network your way into a job, so be sure to be professional in your communications. Give a brief introduction and let them know your skillset, what you’re interested in, and attach a professional resume. To get help on your materials or communication, make an appointment with Career Services.
- The Hire System (OSU’s Career Services Job Board) has some, but not all, GA position postings.
- Another option to help finance your college, is a part-time job. You can search the Hire System for on-campus and off-campus part-time jobs
